The Vision: A Space for Radical Culture

Printer-friendly versionSend to friendShareThis

After decades of a peripatetic existence, Jana Natya Manch is now creating its own theatre space – a home for theatre in a community, an ‘adda’ for radical culture – a space that every city needs!

This space is dedicated to encouraging engagements with working class groups, and fostering a culture of understanding and cooperation, aesthetic excellence and intellectual stimulation. In addition to being Janam’s own creative home, this space will also be made available to others.

This space will push the boundaries of street theatre in India. It will be a community centre built around the arts, drawing on the particular strengths of theatre to build a democratic, progressive, cultural climate.

Janam’s new space will include:

a theatre studio

  • with technical infrastructure – suitable flooring for performance, lights, sound system, and so on
  • with affordable rehearsal spaces
  • for training economically and socially disadvantaged youth in theatre and allied skills
  • for performances, exhibitions and events in theatre and the allied arts

a community centre, which will grow to include

  • a library for community use
  • a film corner
  • a bookshop
  • a café, run by the community
